about

What is more impossible to do - to open the seas or a human heart?
Deeper than Egypt's pits presents one of the key questions of the SHEMA album: the question of what true slavery and true freedom means. It is, in essence, the story of what came after the Exodus.

The people of Israel, despite having their chains of physical slavery broken, remained in a slave-mentality - acting like slaves. Freedom, and living freely, was something that had to be taught, demonstrated to them. This song suggests that the story of Exodus is not just a God freeing and people from slavery, but a God who wants to show people how to be truly free.

lyrics

God caused the Nile to run with blood
to bring out a children who drowned in its bed
But through every vein and every heart
human corruption still ran red

How do you teach a people freedom?
How do you break the chains
they can't see?
How do you end the real oppression
When bondage runs deeper than Egypt's pits?

Deliver us!

Physically free, the people preferred
the familiar old to the good unknown
We return to the dust and we return to our chains
For the problem runs deeper than time or space

How do you teach a people freedom?
How do you break the chains
they can't see?
How do you end the real oppression
When bondage runs deeper than Egypt's pits?

What is more impossible to do
to open the seas or a human heart?

True slavery is much more complex
Than geography or the sting of a whip
So, God gave Moses the law in stone
Perhaps the people could see
they needed a different kind of deliverance

Deliver us!

How do you teach a people freedom?
How do you break the chains
they can't see?
How do you end the real oppression,
When bondage runs deeper than Egypt's pits?

How do you teach a people freedom?
How do you break the chains
they can't see?
How do you end the real oppression,
When bondage runs deeper than Egypt's pits?

How do you teach a people freedom
How do you break the chains
they can't see
How do you end the real oppression
When bondage runs deeper than Egypt's pits

What is more impossible to do
to open the seas or a human heart?

Deliver us!

Our bondage runs deeper
Than Egypt's pits
