I Believe

from Ephathah by Natalie Kendel

/

about

This was one of the first songs I ever wrote. I wrote it nearly 7 years ago, after having begun reading through the gospels in the Bible.

As I read about Jesus, I was deeply moved by the person he was, and I found myself saying, along with the blind man in John 9, 'Lord, I believe'.

I Believe is about the power of the Bible, and its testimony. Its about how its story has sparked trust in so many of its readers. I believe that "...the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow..." (Hebrews 4:12)

Men and women through history have sacrificed their freedom and even their lives for the sake of this book. Many have fought to break social and religious chains in order to make its words accessible and free for anyone who desired to read it. Whether to the first Century Jew who read the prophecies about the Messiah, or to a teenager searching for meaning, the Bible's story the testimony of thousands of years of God revealing himself to humans.

"Now I can see the world is charged
It's glimmering with promises
Written in a script of stars
Dripping from prophets' lips"

(Andrew Peterson)

"... continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of... and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed..."
(2 Timothy 3)

lyrics

On the fragile paper he etched a simple word
The scratches were as broken as his soul
But as he spoke the letters and slowly read them out
His heart started up a new song
His heart started up a new song:

I believe, I believe
In your name Adonai
I believe, I believe
With each breath that I choose to breathe
I believe

In my fragile faith, Lord
Through sweat and blood and tears
My courage has eluded me these years
But I will soon grow silent
So desperate at your feet
And simply whisper: "Lord, help me to believe."

I believe, I believe
In your name Adonai
I believe, I believe
With each breath that I choose to breathe
I believe

On this fragile life, Lord
Come etch your living words
Start a spark that blazes into flame
And no matter what may happen
No matter what may come
Give me faith that I may truly say:

I believe, I believe
In your name Adonai
I believe, I believe
With each breath that I choose to breathe
I believe
