Shakespeare in Space

from [Known] by Natalie Kendel

/

about

In 1961, when Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev, defiantly declared that his cosmonaut returned from outer space and had not found God, a New York magazine had asked C.S. Lewis to respond. He replied:

“Looking for God — or Heaven — by exploring space is like reading or seeing all Shakespeare’s plays in the hope you will find Shakespeare as one of the characters... Shakespeare is in one sense present at every moment in every play...
“If there were an idiot who thought plays exist on their own, without an author, our belief in Shakespeare would not be much affected by his saying, quite truly, that he had studied all the plays and never found Shakespeare in them…..Those who do not find him (God) on earth are unlikely to find him in space."

(C. S. Lewis, Show Magazine, February 1963)

321
We have lift off, off we go
Carrying the human load
Questions like nebulae

Origin
Where to come from
Where to go
Does anybody know. Hello.
Are we floating here alone

And looking for God in outer space
is like reading all of Shakespeare's plays
Hoping to find him in the cast
when he's present in each act

Could we
Study page on page of artistry
In the world, across its tapestry
And miss the Artist altogether

What if a fool
claimed that all of Shakespeare's play
all existed on their own
without an author or an origin?

And looking for God in outer space
is like reading all of Shakespeare's plays
Hoping to find him in the cast
when he's present in each act
