about

Because of Israel's lack of faith in God's promise to give them a new land to live, they wandered through the desert between Egypt and Canaan for 40 years. They didn't wander because the desert took that long to cross, but because they didn't wish to enter an already-inhabited land on the mere promise that God would fight for them and hand it over to them.

During those 40 years, the generation who had seen God bring them out of Egypt passed away. And a new generation, who were in the desert, had seen nothing but desert, grew up. In Deuteronomy, Moses speaks to this desert-born generation, retelling the story of their past slavery, of the wonders God worked to deliver them, and the giving of God's law to Israel.

Sons and Daughters echoes a cry for the need for each generation to experience God for themselves - in their own context, in their present time. It's a prayer for the God who was alive and working in past generations, to be as alive and working in ours.

lyrics

You who opened seas and waters
Breath of your nostrils in days of old
Come and free our sons and daughters
That they may cry "Our Deliverer!"

You who parted seas and waters
Breath of your nostrils in days of old
Come and free our sons and daughters
That they may cry "Our Deliverer!"

He has brought
Brought you out
He has brought
brought you out

You, a pillar
Shadow, fire
Carving a way to another land
Come and free our sons and daughters!
That they may cry "Our Deliverer!"

He has brought
Brought you out
He has brought
brought you out

You who opened seas and waters
Breath of your nostrils in days of old
Come and free our sons and daughters
That they may know our Deliverer!

He has brought
Brought us out
He has bought
brought us out

He has bought
Bought us out
He has bought
brought us out
