Today

about

Based on Hebrews 4, Today concerns a Sabbath rest that still remains for God's children. The sign of who belong to God will be who rest in him and trust in Jesus' ability to defend us, and forgive us.

Interestingly, the author of Hebrew talks about not hardening one's heart "as you did in the rebellion", referring to the children of Israel during their desert wandering. He comes at their disobedience from an unusual angle: one that says Israel's rebellion against God lay in their not resting/trusting in God and his provision of all things. Could it be disobedience means more, and runs deeper, than many understand?

lyrics

If Joshua had given Israel
the fullness of the rest that God had promised them
Then God would not have spoken of a day to come:
A Sabbath-rest that still remains

Because we have a Priest who understands
the depth of human suffering, experience
Who empathizes with our weak and tempted hearts
We have a true defence in Jesus Christ

Today if you hear His voice
do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion
Today if you hear His voice
do not hide in your works
but rest from them

This will be a sign of who are His
Those who do not disobey but trust in this:
That nothing you could ever do could earn a thing
Only trust in all that Jesus does and is
But trust in all that Jesus does and is

Today if you hear His voice
do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion
Today if you hear His voice
do not hide in your works
but rest from them

Today when you hear His voice
do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion
Today when you hear His voice
do not hide in your works
but rest in His
