about

Based on the modern hymn, "Jesus Christ is Waiting" by John L. Bell, 1988.

John Bell was born in 1949 in Scotland. He intended to be a music teacher when he felt the call to the ministry. But in frustration with his classes, he began doing volunteer work in a deprived neighbourhood in London.

As he went on to be a pastor, he invested heavily in youth ministry. His approach to composing songs was to write identifiable traditions of hymnody, but which began to address concerns missing from the current Scottish hymnal.

"I discovered that seldom did our hymns represent the plight of poor people to God. There was nothing that dealt with unemployment, nothing that dealt with living in a multicultural society and feeling disenfranchised. There was nothing about child abuse…that reflected concern for the developing world, nothing that helped see ourselves as brothers and sisters to those who are suffering from poverty or persecution."

- from an interview in Reformed Worship (March 1993)

lyrics

Jesus Christ is waiting,

waiting in our streets
Who will love their neighbour
?
Who will wash their feet
?
Come follow Jesus,

sit with lonely too

Who will greet the stranger
,
welcome the outcast too?

Jesus Christ is raging,

raging in our streets

where injustice spirals
,
where our hate mistreats

Come follow Jesus

Come be angry too
Tenderness for others:

may it burn in you

Jesus Christ is healing,

healing in our streets
Meeting those who suffer,

helping those in need

Come follow Jesus
,
show compassion too

Let our care be active
,
healing just like you.

Jesus Christ is dancing,

dancing in our streets
Sharing joy, renewal

violence can't defeat

Come, follow Jesus

Triumph is ours too
Let our hearts be lifted
Let us dance with you

Jesus Christ is calling,

calling in our streets:

“Who will join my journey?
Who will come be free
?"
I will, Lord Jesus,
 for your way is true

Help me walk beside you

I will follow You.
