(Isaiah 43:10, 1 John 1:1) Can you see a man with dusty sandals walkin’ down our dirt roads and he leaves healing in his wake Did you see? I heard he touched a leper and cooled a burning fever Did you see? We have witnessed what happens when God comes in the midst of us His intentions for all people is revealed in the one called Yeshua Did you hear the words he spoke with passion? He fed the hungry masses and he brings Gospel in each breath And did you feel: he stirred the hearts within us And gave the lost a purpose Did you see? We have witnessed what happens when God comes in the midst of us His intentions for all people Is revealed in the one called Yeshua Did you see? Who is he? Have you met the Nazarene? Taste and see Drink for free Ends our dark, brings life abundantly We have witnessed what happens when God comes in the midst of us His intentions for all people is revealed in the one called Yeshua Come and witness what happens when God comes in the midst of us His intentions for all people is revealed in the man called Yeshua is made clear in his son called Yeshua can be seen in the life of Yeshua

(Matthew 5) Blessed are the poor in spirit for the kingdom’s yours Blessed are the ones who mourn for they will all be comforted Blessed are the meek for their
inheritance is Earth Blessed are the ones who thirst for justice for they will be filled
What a great reward for disciples of the Lord The insulted and the weak are not unseen Come, rejoice, be glad for your future hope is safe and the Champion of your faith has called you 'Blessed' Blessed are the merciful for mercy will be shown Blessed are the pure in heart their eyes will soon behold their God Blessed are the makers of the peace,
you Sons of God Blessed are the persecuted for the cause of Jesus What a great reward for disciples of the Lord The insulted and the weak are not unseen Come, rejoice, be glad for your future hope is safe and the Champion of your faith has called you 'Blessed' Blessed are the ones who suffer for the sake of love Didn't they oppress the prophets that have gone before you? Blessed are the ones who seem to lose for they have won You will have the greatest prize -  the presence of the living God! What a great reward for disciples of the Lord The insulted and the weak are not unseen Come, rejoice, be glad for your future hope is safe and the Champion of your faith has called you 'Blessed' Come, rejoice, be glad for your future hope is safe and the Champion of your faith has called you 'Blessed'

(Genesis 3, Luke 7:36-50, Matthew 27) Standing in a garden, nakedness discovered, death still dripping from their lips, comes a voice familiar: “Where are you?” it's asking. King and Queen hide from those steps. But where they brace for accusation, they find God clothing them instead. Is this what happens when God comes to meet with men; when perfect good collides with our corruption? Is this how power’s shown - a servant kneeling down? Is this what things look like when God comes near to us? Standing in the background in the house of Simon, as the meal is served she comes. At the feet of Jesus, though her sin is famous, washing Jesus' feet with tears And as the pharisee condemns her, Yeshua forgives her sins instead. Is this what happens when God comes to meet with men; when perfect good collides with our corruption? Is this how power’s shown - a servant kneeling down? Is this what things look like when God comes near to us? Kneeling in a garden, brought to answer Pilate. “king of kings” above his head. God of endless power breathes his last this hour, yet “Forgive them all”, he said. Where we expected condemnation, He came incarnate to redeem. Where he could rightly leave Creation, he takes responsibility. Is this what happens when God comes to meet with men when perfect love collides with our corruption Is this his kingdom shown? How death is overthrown? Is this what God looks like when he comes near us? Is this his person shown - A king comes to his own? Is what life look like when God comes near to us?

(Romans 12:21, 1 Peter 3:9) Our ankles may not bear the weight of cold and metal chains, But our world is still a-flood with man's oppressive hate. And just like in the ages past, we need a different call: to not be overcome by hate but overcome with love.  We dub our time as 'civilised'- imagine we've evolved. But history is on a loop: a problem we can't solve. How easy to be swept along the current of our Fall! But Christ has made a better way to overcome with love. We can't defeat our hate with hate, nor darkness with the dark, But light can fill the largest cell and free imprisoned hearts. So, You who are the Light of men, inspire in us now: to not be overcome by hate but overcome with love. And though we seem to lose the fight, fall victim to world, Our King shall have the victory, and have the final word. So break the chains that bind our hearts that we may dare your song! "Do not be overcome by hate but overcome with love!" So break the chains that bind our hearts that we may dare your song: "Do not be overcome by hate but overcome with love!"

Pray With Me 03:59
(Hebrews 4:14-16) When we are feeling pain If we are gripped by fear When we are faced with difficult decisions If we are caught in need Feeling anxiety then there is one who gladly hears our thoughts Come pray with me to our Father to one who hears who knows our every need For our priest understands our trials Pray with me Come pray with me There in a quiet place or in the noise of the day our heart can seek his wisdom when we lack it Both in our thankfulness and in our days of doubt the Spirit prays the groans we can’t pronounce Come pray with me to our Father to one who hears who knows our every need For our priest understands our trials Pray with me Come pray And as we pray May we learn to hear Come pray with me to our Father to one who hears who knows our every need For our priest understands our trials Pray with me Come pray with me For our priest understands our hearts Pray with me Come pray with me

No Liturgy 03:53
No liturgy can conjure up your presence No words can bind your will to any man We can’t control your favour with tradition No ritual could ever force your hand But you come close, you come close Because you’re good You come close You come close Because you're good You can’t be bought with any of our offerings Manipulated into our hands Who can afford to pay the steep admission No mortal soul can foil your gifts or plans But you persist, you persist Because you’re kind You persist You persist Because you're kind So come relinquish efforts that are futile Come rest into the life he freely gives And you’re invited to this endless banquet Who’s host will give out freely to us all And Jesus gives, Jesus gives Because he loves Jesus gives Jesus gives Because he loves He loves

Immanuel 04:46
(Exodus 25:8, Exodus 33:7, 2 Samuel 7:1,2, Isaiah 7:14) Resting at the foot of Sinai, down among a desert people, stood a tent, a tabernacle where the Lord of heaven dwelt. Kings of Earth lived in their palace', Pharaoh’s throne was gold and silver, But the King of King’s own presence came to them on level ground. Immanuel, Immanuel The statement of the Lord’s intentions The Son - the living wish of God - That he again will dwell with us David set to build a temple, Solomon to raise a structure, made of chiseled stone and cedar, standing in Jerusalem. What could human hands assemble that could earn the Lord’s Shekinah? God had never come for splendour, but by his humility. Immanuel, Immanuel The statement of the Lord’s intentions The Son - the living wish of God - That he again will dwell God came in flesh to live in hearts of men Soon we will say God will dwell with men Immanuel, Immanuel! The statement of the Lord’s intentions The Son - the living wish of God - To tabernacle here with us That he again will dwell with us.

Walk beside me Jesus while I learn to trust for my eyes are drawn towards the waves Help my heart recall that you are on board and until I trust you will never leave my side Walk beside me Jesus as I learn to pray for my mind is careless in its trek Help the time we spend be as with a friend and until I pray you will never leave my side Walk beside me Jesus as I grow to love for I am not loving in myself But we are transformed when the Lord is close So until I’m changed you will never leave So until I trust never will you leave my side

(2 Corinthians 3:3) What does your life speak of when they see you? How does his love play out on your journey? You are the living letters there for others to read: You may be the only Bible they ever crack open. Your life is a scroll, unrolling, telling a story of faith. Oh, let your life be  a testimony of grace  There's much to say  and there’s little time to say it
So, let our lives be the proof that God is loving  You are the living letters there for others to read: You may be the only Bible they ever crack open. Your life is a scroll, unrolling, telling a story of faith. Oh, let your life be  a testimony of grace
Not in ink but written by the Spirit We are the living letters, there for others to read. We may be the only Bible they ever crack open. Our life is a scroll, unrolling, telling a story of faith. Oh, let my life be  a testimony of grace

(Recorded live in concert) On that day the lines were drawn. A hill outside Jerusalem was the field where light and dark came to battle. Trees were raised like banners high; the Word of God became a cry. Captain of angelic hosts chose his weapon. Is this Heaven's warrior? Who takes up arms as he spreads his out Roaring lion King of Zion What a way to win a war! This is Heaven's warrior (Hebrew: El, El Ha-Gibbor, meaning God, God the Warrior) Hell poured its every power: the final move was made that hour. Blood ran thicker than our hate on that hilltop. He who said he’d brought a sword, refusing to surrender us, wins the day by making plain what his heart is. Is this Heaven's warrior? Who takes up arms as he spreads his out Roaring lion King of Zion What a way to win a war! This is Heaven's warrior (Hebrew: El, El Ha-Gibbor, meaning God, God the Warrior) Every blow on Calvary laid bare both sides for all to see good and evil now revealed as he’s dying This is Heaven's warrior? Who takes up arms as he lays his down Roaring lion King of Zion What a way to win a war! This is Heaven's warrior This is Heaven's warrior (Hebrew: El, El Ha-Gibbor, meaning God, God the Warrior)

(Ecclesiastes 3:11, Hebrews 13:8, Psalm 31:15) You are God of every hour, every part of the road ahead; In the night of deep confusion and the morning filled with joy. You are God of every moment, in our anger and our pain. You have seen each falling sparrow, noticed every heart afraid. You are God of every person every culture, every age any soul may call upon you you have heard each thought we’ve prayed You are God of every season, when we reap and when we sow. You are Lord of all the journey, fully relevant, God of all

(Isaiah 9:1-7, Zephaniah 3:17) If the Lord is with us tell me, who can stand against us? What can man or mortal do if the Maker of all things will stand with you? Our God, he is the Mighty One For who is like the Lord of Hosts? And we will sing praises to the Great I AM Our God he is the Mighty One Oh my heart, do not fear: Put your hope in his provision Death or life in pain or feast He's the God of every season every need Our God, he is the Mighty One For who is like the Lord of Hosts? And we will sing praises to the Great I AM Our God he is the Mighty One Death or life in pain or feast He's the God of every season, every need Our God, he is the Mighty One For who is like the Lord of Hosts? And we will sing praises to the Great I AM Our God he is the Mighty One (Norwegian) Vår Gud, han er den Mektige For ingen andre er som han! Vi synger ut sanger til den Gud som er Vår Gud han er den mektige Vår Gud han er den mektige!

Contagious 02:33
(1 Chronicles 16:11) “If you want to get warm you must stand near the fire: if you want to be wet you must get into the water. If you want joy, power, peace, eternal life, you must get close to, or even into, the thing that has them. They are not a sort of prize which God could, if He chose, hand out to anyone. They are a great fountain of energy and beauty spurting up at the very centre of reality. If you are close to it, the spray will wet you: if you are not, you will remain dry. Once a man is united to God, how could he not live forever? Once a man is separated from God, what can he do but wither and die.” - C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity _________________________________________ Life is not an object a thing which can be wrapped placed into a box and granted mortal man Life itself’s a Person: life personified And if you would be living you must draw close to Christ Life is sort of caught: it's contagious in its spread. If you longed for warmth at a fire you would sit. Must get in the water if wanting to get wet. And so it is with living: you must draw close to Christ How could he give life without himself? How could he give blessings in his absence? Life and love and goodness don’t exist outside the Lord So his presence means to live forevermore Good itself’s a Person love personified and if you try to seek him you’ll come to realise that he was always drawing you home to Jesus Christ

Fear has wrapped its coils around my thinking painting God as threatening and hard. But threat of punishment's a poor incentive to trust another with your life and heart And I am drawn to you just like a whisper The power of a voice that needn't shout It is your kindness that leads me to repentance Your loving patience makes room and when my eyes are opened to see the one called Jesus That's when my heart is stirred in me to move t'wards you Men have tried to share you through their methods Wielding fear like weapons set to cut But Jesus' kingdom doesn't spread through hatred or separating everyone from "us" And I am drawn to you just like a fire spilling warmth and passion from your heart It is your kindness that leads me to repentance Your loving patience makes room and when my eyes are opened to see the one called Jesus That's when my heart is stirred in me to move t'wards you He defends the free will of his enemies To let them choose he fought to the death And those who would be followers of Jesus must follow in his steps Kindness leads us to repentance and it's your patience that makes room And when our eyes are opened to see the one called Jesus that's when our heart is stirred in us to move is when my heart is stirred in me to move t'wards you

Big Enough 02:49
(Isaiah 41:10) Is not God big enough to receive the doubt in us? Can’t his presence room all human pain? Is not truth true enough to survive the lies in us? So, whatever you may bring, God is big enough. Is not God big enough to receive the fear in us? Can’t his heart accept a stumbling faith? Is not he strong enough to forgive the sin in us? So, whatever you may bring, God is big enough. Are our questions threats to Answer himself? Could we bring a thing to him that would overreach his love? Is not God big enough to receive the dark in us? Can’t his light envelop any shade? Is not he Life enough to reverse the death in us? So, whatever you may bring, God is big enough He is big enough.

One Day 05:56
(Recorded live in concert.) (Revelation 21) Then I saw the Holy city Earth and Heaven touch once more And the great divide unravels his eyes The rift is bridged by Jesus Christ There within the city of Zion not a single temple is found for the Lamb is there, His presence fills the air, and every child’s a royal heir. One day They will say: God’s made his dwelling here with men and he will live with them. Wiping every tear No death nor mourning for the former things have passed away And he will be their light, and he will be their life. And so at last the greatest dream comes true This is what the story’s leading up to: that God would live with you Soon another age is approaching, when he’s makes all things new. All that God has done, the battle he has won, was all to make this possible. One day We will say: God’s made his dwelling here with men. And he will live with them Wiping every tear No death nor mourning for the former things have passed away And he will be our light, and he will be our life. And so at last the greatest dream comes true This is what the story’s leading up to: that God would live with you And so at last the hope of man comes true that God will tabernacle here with you

about

Often the encounters between God and human beings are portrayed as violent, fearful, and threatening. But is this truly what happens when God comes to meet with man? Or is the fear something we project unto God?

Is This What Happens is the new album by theologian, Natalie Kendel. In this collection of modern hymns, Kendel explores the theme of tabernacle, and how God takes steps towards being with man throughout the biblical narrative. What does it look like when God tabernacles with us? Are our expectations of what would happen if God showed up a result of our distorted view of who he is? And does this distorted expectation stem from a moment long ago in Eden?

What would happen if we attempted to read, with new eyes, what actually happens when God comes near?

Is This What Happens is a collection of original songs predominantly written for communal use and collective singing.

Over the past decade, Natalie Kendel has written dozens of modern hymns and Christians songs, aiming to inspire exploration of the biblical narrative, as well as provide theologically-rich and theologically-responsible content.
